The male g-spot is actually called the prostate. You’ve probably heard a lot about the importance of prostate health, but even though people like to talk about it, few men actually understand it. Women don’t have prostates, so sometimes these are called the “male gland.” A prostate is actually half glad, half muscle.

Prostates are walnut-sized and have three lobes.They surround the urethra, which is why men with prostate problems sometimes have a hard time urinating. The urethra trails from the bladder to the penis, and the prostate is found near the bladder end of this tube, right in front of the rectum. More in prostate massage.

An enlarged prostate doesn’t always, however, mean BHP. That’s the best-case scenario. Sometimes, an enlarged prostate means something much, much worse. In some cases, an enlarged prostate can indicate a prostate infection, but sadly, many times it indicates prostate cancer.

Prostate massage is all about help you and your partner enjoy sex. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you enjoy most in bed; when you both have amazing orgasms, that’s when you both build upon your foundation and really start to expand you sex life. Prostate massage is just the start of that.

The first step to amazing orgasms is finding your prostate in the first place. You can do this with your partner if you want, but for the first time, many men feel most comfortable exploring solo. Either way, finding your prostate takes a bit of patience and a lot of relaxation.

Radiation therapy for prostate cancer is one of the more common alternatives to a radical prostate removal. It involves sending a beam of radiation directly into the prostate gland to kill cancerous cells and hopefully not affect the surrounding normal tissue. However there is a less drastic alternative for localized cancer confined only to the prostate gland. Known as brachytherapy, this treatment consists of injecting small, rice-sized grains of radioactive material, usually iodine or palladium, directly into the prostate gland. This article will examine the brachytherapy procedure, its details, and possible side effects.

The seeds that are used in brachytherapy are about the size of a grain of rice and consist of either iodine or palladium. Both of these are radioactive materials which slowly decrease in radioactivity over 3 to 6 months. These are positioned inside the prostate gland to irradiate the cancerous cells. However, to know exactly where to place them, some preparation work must be done first.

The patient will first be given an enema, and then under general anesthetic be given an ultrasound. The ultrasound is used to take a “snapshot” of the prostate gland so positioning can be planned before the treatment is actually performed. Once the planning is completed, the injection can be done safely.

Injection is via a long, fine needle. The seeds are inserted through the piece of skin between the testicles and the anus, known as the perineum. Once placed inside the prostate gland, the radioactivity goes to work. It will remain active for several weeks, then slowly die down.

After the treatment, there are a few side effects that may develop. The most common is pain the perineum directly attributable to the needle insertion. Some men feel a dull ache in this area for several days. This can be easily managed through simply non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, and the knowledge that it will heal quickly. After a few weeks, side effects from the radiation itself may present themselves. These are usually urinary problems, such as a weak stream and a burning sensation upon urination. These will generally subside over time. There can also be as much as a 50% chance of impotence, which is high, but not as high as with radical prostate removal surgery.

Prostate brachytherapy can be seen as a very viable alternative to the more drastic prostate cancer treatments that can take a long time to heal from. Surgery can mean weeks of recuperation, and traditional beam radiation therapy can mean severe side effects and possible damage to surrounding tissues. Cancer that is contained within the prostate gland does not always need to be treated with such life-altering consequences, and brachytherapy is a possible answer to that need.

Flomax is a prescription medicine that has been approved and licensed by the FDA for the treatment of enlarged prostates. The medical terms for an enlarged prostate include benign prostatic hyperplasia, benign prostatic hypertrophy or BPH. Flomax is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

How It Works

This medication works like the common alpha blockers, it blocks the alpha-1 receptors. These receptors can be found throughout the body including the prostate. When alpha-1 receptors are blocked it allows the muscles to relax in the prostate and the bladder neck. Flomax is different from other prostate medications since it doesn’t actively shrink the prostate as some other drugs do. However, the symptoms are quickly relieved with it when the muscles relax. This means that Flomax provides relief for the symptoms, but it isn’t a cure for the condition.

Taking Flomax

This drug is taken by mouth as a capsule every day at least thirty minutes after a meal. You should take the whole capsule and never open, chew or crush the capsules. You should take the capsules at the same time each day so that you have an even level of the drug in your blood. You should always take Flomax, as prescribed since this helps it to work properly. If you stop taking it, prostate enlargement will return and you will not longer receive the benefits.

Side Effects

There are possible side effects with this drug as there is with all prescription medications. Although side effects won’t be experienced by every individual taking. Rather the opposite is true, many people tolerate this drug very well. Most side effects that occur are minor and either have no necessary treatment or can easily be treated by your healthcare provider. The most common side effects of this drug include abnormal ejaculation, runny or stuffy nose, dizziness and infections including the cold or flu. There are a number of drugs that can interact with Flomax so you should tell your doctor of any medicines you are taking and they will make sure no interaction will occur.

Before you start taking Flomax there are several things you should tell your health care provider. If you have any allergies including foods, dyes, preservatives or sulfa then you should tell your doctor. If you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant or breastfeeding then you should also talk with your doctor before taking this drug. When telling your doctor about any medicines you are taking you should be sure to include both prescription and non-prescription medicines as well as vitamins and herbal supplements.

Zinc has been closely associated with prostate health. This gland contains more zinc than any other organ in your body. It’s a major ingredient of seminal fluid and a deficiency can lead to major problems. Zinc deficiency has also been linked to prostate inflammation and enlargement, therefore a zinc supplement may be advocated both to prevent and alleviate an enlarged prostate.

It’s somewhat unusual to have a deficiency in zinc, it really depends on your diet. Unfortunately, a lack of zinc in your daily diet can lead to prostate problems not the least of which is impotence. Zinc absorption may be decreased in men with prostate enlargement (prostatitis) because estrogen levels are higher and estrogen impairs intestinal zinc uptake. In prostatitis, zinc levels are only ONE-TENTH of those in a normal prostate.

If you choose to use a supplement, keep in mind that zinc is best absorbed as a chelated complex. Another way to get zinc is to eat foods that naturally contain it. Zinc-rich foods include red meat, shellfish, oysters, shrimp, fish, whole grains, nuts -especially walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and legumes like peas, beans, and soy beans.

Because zinc inhibits copper absorption, you’ll need to supplement with it as well. While you’re at it add in other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, and selenium.

It’s really easy to include extra zinc into your daily routine either by a supplement or including rich sources of food into your daily menu. You’ll be rewarded with a healthy prostate and not suffer the effects of prostatitis.

Because of today’s medical advancement many illnesses and diseases are well understood. However, prostate cancer is one of the remaining cancerous conditions that is misunderstood. There are many reasons for this, one possible reason is that men do want to deal with this common health health condition. Prostate cancer is one of widespread cancers that affects men and is most common at age 50. For majority of men, prostate cancer affects the minority of how their manhood is defined. The prostate is a key gland in the sexual ability and performance of men. Prostate cancer is any tumor or abnormal growth of cells in the tissues of the prostate gland and probably beyond the prostate. Most cases of this cancer are not that fatal, it is necessary to understand the cause of this disease and help know the symptoms and start treatment.

The cause

The exact cause of prostate cancer is not known, but many health experts believe that one’s age and family history may play a role in the chances of developing this disease. Prostate cancer is very common and is an old man’s disease. Medical studies show that a potential cause of this ailment is the alteration of the balance of male hormone, testosterone. This hormone is produced by the testes which influences the development and spread of prostate cancer. Thus, men with higher testosterone levels are more prone to acquire this health ailment. Age, is a prevailing factor in the risk for the development of prostate cancer. As men ages, the risk of acquiring this cancer also increases.

The Symptoms

If prostate cancer is acquired, many men may not experience any symptoms. However, some men may experience symptoms that might indicate the presence of prostate cancer. Careful These may include the following:

    * Frequent urination, especially at night
* Difficulty in starting or holding back urine
* Weak or interrupted flow of urine
* Painful or burning urination
* Painful ejaculation
* Blood in urine or semen
* Chronic pain in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs

The Treatments

As of the moment, there is no cure for prostate cancer, there are various prostate cancer treatments that are available to help men with this illness. Prostate cancer patients should bear in mind that no two men are alike when it comes to cure. In addition, these treatment options for prostate cancer depends on the development of the tumor. Consultations with prostate specialists like urologists, radiation oncologist, and medical oncologist may offer many extensive assessment of the available and appropriate treatments and perceived out comes. Some particular treatment for prostate cancer may include:

    * Active surveillance
* Prostatectomy (Surgery) and other surgical procedures
* Radiation Therapy
* Hormone Therapy
* Chemotherapy
* Other treatment Options

Knowing the causes, symptoms, and treatments for prostate cancer may enable individuals to understand this health ailment. Rather than learning these factors, health professionals advice individuals to change their diet. Cutting down on animal fats and consuming lots of fiber, fruits, and vegetables. Improvements in this area may help protect against prostate cancers and lead to happier, fuller lives.

Men over the age of 50 should be concerned about symptoms of enlarged prostate or BPH. BPH stands for benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is not understood what causes BPH and there are no real risk factors that you can change to reduce your risk of prostate cancer. Prostate problems have been around for centuries and it was found that men who had their testicles removed before puberty did not develop prostate problems and cancer. Doctors believe that aging is the biggest cause of prostate problems. Rarely will a man under 40 be diagnosed with prostate problems.

Testosterone, the male hormone that is produced through the lifetime of a man, decreases in production of this hormone. This leaves a higher level of the female hormone estrogen. Studies show the higher amount of estrogen in the prostate gland increases the substances that promote cell growth. There are two main periods of growth of the prostate gland; at puberty and it starts growing again around the age of 25. In some men, the prostate continues to grow until it is restricting the urethra and causes problems with urination. Some believe the cells are given special “instructions” early in life that causes them to reawaken these cells later in life. These special cells then send signals to the other cells in the gland to grow or be more sensitive to hormones that influence its growth.

Symptoms of BPH often are not noticed until the patient begins having trouble passing urine. The patient may gradually lose control of bladder function. The bladder does not empty completely and could cause problems with infection. Other symptoms of an enlarged prostate are a weak or interrupted stream of urine, an urgency to urinate, leaking or dribbling, and more often needing to urinate during the night.

The prostate’s size does not always find out how bad the barrier is or how severe the symptoms. A patient with an enlarged prostate may have only a little obstruction and others who have smaller prostate glands may have bigger blockages and problems. Occasionally a man will not realize he has a prostate problem or blockage until he is unable to urinate at all. The inability to urinate may be triggered by an over-the-counter cold or allergy medicine with a decongestant drug named sympathomimetic. The inability to urinate can also be caused by extreme cold, alcohol, and long periods of inactivity or immobility. It is important to note that eight out of 10 cases with these symptoms will point to BPH. They also can mean a more serious condition is present that might need immediate treatment.

Severe cases of BPH can cause more serious problems over time. The strain on the bladder caused by urine retention can lead to urinary tract infections and bladder and kidney damage. It may also lead to stones in the urinary tract and incontinence. If BPH is left untreated, the bladder may develop permanent damage. If you are having any of the listed symptoms, check with your doctor to have diagnostic testing.

Your doctor has decided that surgery to correct your prostate problems is indicated. What can you expect with the surgery and your recover time? Your hospital stay will depend on the surgery you have and how quickly your body recovers from that surgery. Once your surgery is complete, you will be hooked up to a special catheter through the opening in the penis to drain any urine into a collection bag. It is called a Foley catheter and has a small balloon that is filled with water to hold it in the bladder. This catheter is left in for several days. Bladder spasms may occur the day after surgery. These are painful but normally disappear eventually. The catheter used to drain the bladder causes these spasms.

Antibiotics may be given to you while you are in the hospital to prevent infection. Some doctors prefer to wait and see if an infection develops before giving antibiotics. The alarming rates of antibiotic resistant infections are making doctors more cautious in prescribing this medicine.

After surgery, you may see blood spots or small blood clots in the urine. If your bladder is being flushed with water, your urine may be red until the water irrigation is stopped. Bleeding is normal after prostate surgery and should clear up by the time you leave the hospital. You will be asked to drink up to eight cups of water a day to help flush out the bladder and promote faster healing.

When you return home after surgery there are some things you should do and some that things you should not do after the procedure. When you get home you should continue to drink a minimum of eight cups of water to keep flushing out the bladder. You should eat a balanced diet to prevent constipation. It is important you don’t strain when having a bowel movement. If you find you are constipated you should ask your doctor if you can take a laxative. You also should not do any heavy lifting after prostate surgery and you should not drive or run heavy equipment or machinery.

After your surgery you will find that your stream of urine will grow stronger but it could take a while until you can urinate normally. Once the catheter is removed urine will pass over the wound and cause some discomfort. You may also feel a sense of urgency to urinate. The problem will gradually go away and you will be back to normal urination in a few months.

Another problem that may be experienced after surgery is incontinence. You may have some temporary problems but seldom does it become a permanent problem. Doctors have discovered that if a patient suffers from incontinence the patient has probably been experiencing incontinence before the surgery. The bladder should regain full function after the operation and a normal recovery time.

You may experience some bleeding after the scab inside the bladder loosens. Blood may appear again in the urine but will normally stop if you drink plenty of liquid and rest in bed.

A biopsy is needed to confirm that prostate cancer is present in your body. After the diagnosis is confirmed, it is classified into grades. All of this grading, staging, and PSA level can be confusing. We will try to help you make sense of the information you are being bombarded with.

First, PSA is a substance made in the prostate gland. The PSA level is usually low unless the patient has a higher count. A higher PSA level often signals a problem with the prostate and possibly cancer.

Cancers are graded which is a mark of the differences between the cancer cells and the normal cells. These cells are inspected through a microscope and graded on a “Gleason” grade. The Gleason grading system uses a range from 1 to 5. If your cancer is graded as 1, it means the cancer cells that are clustered together look like normal prostate tissue. If the cancer cells do not resemble normal cells at all, the grade could be a 5. Doctors will examine the two areas of the prostate that has cancer cells and grade them individually. Those grades are then added together and will be on a scale from 2 to 10. A low Gleason score means that your cancer is a slow growing cancer. If it is a high-grade, your number is high on the grading scale; it means the cancer could be more aggressive in its growth.

Staging is another measurement that your doctor will talk to you about. Staging is rating the size of the cancer and where it is found. It also will tell you if the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, the bones, or other organs in the body. Staging is necessary so you and your doctor can decide how aggressive your treatment should be and which treatment is best for you.

There are two methods used to stage prostate cancer. There is a traditional method that classifies into four categories, A through D, and the second is TNM. This acronym stands for Tumor-Nodes-Metastases. The staging for the A-D method is:

– A is early cancer. It means the cancer is only found within the prostate gland and cannot be felt by a rectal exam.

– B is the stage when the tumor is found in the prostate gland and can be felt during a rectal exam.

– In Stage C, the cancer is more advanced and has spread outside the prostate to surrounding tissue. Stage C cancer has not spread to lymph nodes or other organs.

– Stage D is the most serious stage. It means the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes and other sites in the body. That can include the ribs, spine, or other bones or organs.

TNM staging is a little simpler method. It looks at the tumor stage (T), if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes (N) and if the cancer has metastasized (M) to other sites of the body. Tumor stages are ranked as 1-4, lymph node involvement is graded N for zero, or 0-3. Metastasis is rated O or 1. MO means there has not been any metastasis and M1 means it has traveled to another location in the body.

Prostate cancer is the second biggest cancer related killer in males over sixty, yet many men don’t look after themselves well enough and seek help when it is needed. Luckily there are many treatments available for those suffering with prostate cancer, a lot of which can totally eradicate the condition.

To show how invasive each treatment is we will go through each treatment from least invasive to most invasive.

Watchful waiting

Watchful waiting, also known as active surveillance, is a treatment where the doctors just keep and active eye on the illness to see how it is progressing and is normally chosen for only one of two reasons.

Reason one – The cancer is in its infancy and the tumor is small, confined and expected to grow very slowly

Reason two – The patient has a separate medical condition that means surgery would be worse for the patient than the current suffering.

Hormonal Therapy

Testosterone drives the male sex drive and it also stimulates prostate cancer cells, as they are hormone dependant. If the testosterone hormone can be blocked it will reduce the speed the cancerous cells can grow.

These therapies can work in three ways, one is through an oral tablet, which reduces the testosterone production in the testes, two is antiandrogen therapy to block the effects of testosterone and number three is to totally remove the testes completely.

Radiation

Using Gamma rays, the medical professionals try to kill every possible cancerous cell; this is completed in one of two ways.

One-way is to have small-radiated rod inserted into the prostate and left for a period of time to kill the cancerous cells.

The second way is to use an external radiation beam to concentrate on the area from outside the body.

Prostectomy

The procedure for prostectomy is a surgical one and involves totally removing the prostate gland; this is normally carried out early on in the cancer lifecycle, as the surgery cannot be completed if the cancer has moved to other areas of the body.

Chemotherapy

The most dangerous of all the therapies, chemotherapy, needs to be administered carefully as the drugs damage and destroy the cancerous cells, and if given in the wrong doses can kill healthy cells too.

The end product

A lot of these treatments are quite invasive and dangerous in their own way, in some cases the side affects to having these treatments can be quite drastic. It has been known for people to suffer with impotence, erectile dysfunction and loss of sexual appetite from having these different treatments.

The after affects of this can be quite devastating on an emotional level as the male takes time to get used to the after affects the treatment caused, in some cases this requires counseling to alleviate any stress, depression or anger.

What is important though is that the cancer is eradicated, once it has gone the person suffering can sleep easily knowing they have managed to escape one of the biggest killers that men have to face alone.
